Being a photographer is about more than the camera, it's about vision, creativity and patience. My most recent personal project has put every single one of those skills to the test.
Sometimes an idea is just an idea, but occasionally there is something in it which eats away at you, that little voice in your head constantly telling you that it's worth doing. With the recent awful weather, I decided to work indoors to create something interesting, commercial and different. In the kitchen cupboard languished a bag of coffee beans, which are great for all manner of creations.
I decided it would be fun to recreate iconic images of famous faces, only using those coffee beans. After searching the web for suitable inspiration, I set to work. A lot of patience was needed to sculpt the beans into the required shapes and my tools - tweezers and a cocktail stick - were very useful. Once the images were created and the final tweaks had been made, I photographed them and then, in Photoshop, added some colour toning effects, which you can see clearly on the Bob Marley image.
The perfectionist in me rendered me unable to sleep until I was satisfied with the images, leading to some VERY late nights (4am), but it was well worth the effort I am sure you will agree.
