Moscow State Circus
Many people dream of running away to join the circus and for a few hours I got a sneak peek behind the scenes of one as I photographed The Moscow State Circus, What a joy it was too - but they had no vacancies ;)
I am drawn to circuses and have experienced many of them around the world - in Thailand, Spain, France and London to name but a few. I believe it is the talented artists, the varied performances and the energy which attract me.
The Moscow State Circus is in Brighton as part of the Fringe Festival. Their new show 'Babushkin Sekret' is set in 1927 and is inspired by the legend of the "12 Chairs", in which two "comrades" go on an adventure to track down some family jewels, hidden from the Bolsheviks years earlier inside a dining room chair which was then expropriated by the government after the Russian Revolution.
When I arrived at the Big Top, the circus was bustling with activity as performers warmed up, practised and rehearsed. The organisers outlined what was about to take place, so that I could plan a variety of shots and consider all suitable angles.
First up was a duo - Yulia Tsurikova & Alexander Doktorov - performing a graceful and powerful aerial act, their ropes entwining, bringing them together and then apart like a twisted love story.
The entertainment then turned to the skipping sensation, Skakalki 9. Oh, but just skipping would be too easy! Instead they somersaulted and back-flipped as the skipping rope whizzed through the air.
Clearly, that was still too simple, as they then sat down on chairs and continued to jump rope from a seated position!
I then had the pleasure of watching Shcherbakovs, a juggling act. Not hard you might think, but they perform their choreographed act on a rotating platform - they practise for up to 8 hours daily! Hah, not hard you say!!
The hardest part for such shows these days is finding wonderful professionals (even for clowning around) and developing acts that have never seen before. However, this show promises to be a visual spectacular and the skill of the performers will leave you lost for words.
There was a big group shot to top it all off and as my work day was ending, theirs was just beginning. To find out more and to book tickets, click HERE.
